BBC pundit Danny Murphy thinks that Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim will fail with his attempt to do something a great Chelsea team from the past achieved in the Premier League.

Chelsea and Man Utd, two giants of the Premier League, both have young managers in the dugout.

Blues head coach Enzo Maresca, 45, is going through ups and downs during his debut season at Stamford Bridge. However, Chelsea’s owners think Maresca is a brilliant coach going straight to the very top.

Meanwhile, Man Utd appointed Ruben Amorim as their head coach back in November. Unfortunately, the 40-year-old’s had a very challenging first few months at Old Trafford.

Amorim has implemented the back three system that worked so well for him in Portugal at Sporting Lisbon, but he’s run into plenty of issues so far in Manchester.

Danny Murphy doubts Man Utd can replicate Chelsea’s success with a back three

Even though Man Utd sit 14th in the Premier League table right now, Amorim recently shared his aim to win the division title in the coming years. He said via BBC Sport: “The goal is to win the Premier League. I know we are losing games but the goal is to win the Premier League again. I don’t know how long it will take.”

BBC pundit Danny Murphy reacted to Amorim’s claims by suggesting he may never be able to win the Premier League using his current system.

He made the interesting observation that Chelsea are the only club in Premier League history to win the division title using a back three. It was back in the 2016/17 season under Antonio Conte’s management.

Murphy told BBC Sport: “Even if he (Ruben Amorim) gets all the backing in the world, and he wants to play this system, and he’s financially able to bring in players, I’m not sure that system can win the Premier League against the type of teams he’s coming up against…

“Only one team have won the Premier League playing that way, and that was Chelsea. Let’s not forget who they had in the middle of the pitch. They had [Nemanja] Matic and [N’Golo] Kante. They also had [Diego] Costa and [Eden] Hazard up the top, which is a bit different.”

Chelsea, who clinched the league title with 93 points back in 2017, remain the only side to win the division crown using a back three as their main formation.

Gary Cahill said Conte knew the formation inside out as he turned the Blues into a winning machine.

The biggest difference between the Chelsea team of nearly a decade ago and the current Man Utd squad is the calibre of players.

Chelsea’s title-winning team under Antonio Conte

Back in the 2016/17 campaign, Chelsea romped to the Premier League crown during Conte’s first year with them.

There was quality throughout the entire Blues XI during the title-winning season.

In particular, Marcos Alonso and Victor Moses transformed into top-class wing-backs in the 3-4-2-1 formation. Meanwhile, the midfield axis of N’Golo Kante and Nemanja Matic was irresistible once it clicked into full gear.

Eden Hazard hailed Conte as a “12th man on the pitch” for Chelsea during their success together. Even though he implemented a back three, the team was still a fluent attack when they went forward with some real firepower.

It’s going to take a gigantic turnaround for Amorim to enjoy similar success at Man Utd.
