Chelsea made plenty of signings during a very busy summer, but one incoming at Stamford Bridge has left Ben Foster so confused.
Yet again, the Blues were extremely active in the summer transfer window. It’s something the supporters have become used to seeing under the current Chelsea owners.
There’s been a real mix of deals from Enzo Maresca’s side in the summer. However, Paul Merson hailed Chelsea’s signing of Pedro Neto, naming it as one of the window’s top three transfers.
Unfortunately, some of the other transfer business has come in for criticism from other areas of the media.

Ben Foster rips into Jadon Sancho transfer
Ben Foster has just delivered a pretty damning verdict on Chelsea’s signing of Jadon Sancho from Manchester United in the summer.
Telegraph journalist James Ducker has explained via X the detail of Sancho’s move to Stamford Bridge. If the Blues finish in the top 14 of the Premier League this season, they’ll have to sign the English attacker from United on a permanent deal worth between £20m to £25m.
Foster can’t quite seem to get his head around Chelsea signing the 24-year-old winger on a season-long loan with an obligation to buy.
He said on his YouTube channel: “I still don’t understand what they (Chelsea) are trying to do. I really don’t. The Jadon Sancho move, in particular, really boggles my head.
“He’s on loan for a season, they’ve got an obligation to buy… If they finish in the top 14, they have to buy him for £25m. What? What does that do? He could not play a minute of football for this season, Chelsea finish in the top 10, and they have to spend £25m on him. What world are we living in here?”
Competition at Chelsea
The obvious obstacle that Sancho is running into at Chelsea is the competition for places. We’ll see in time how many minutes the skilful winger actually gets.
We’ve seen during his time in Manchester that he’s not lit up English football in the same way he previously did in Germany with Borussia Dortmund. Hopefully, a change of scenery and a switch to London can help him rediscover his best form.
| Club | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
| Manchester United | 83 | 12 | 6 |
| Borussia Dortmund | 158 | 53 | 67 |
On paper, Sancho is competing with Chelsea teammates such as Neto, Noni Madueke and Mykhailo Mudryk for the wide positions. The likes of Christopher Nkunku, Joao Felix and Cole Palmer have the versatility to operate in wide areas, too.
It feels vital that Sancho gets off to a quick start with the Blues to help stand out in a busy squad.
