Chelsea were one of the busiest clubs around during a frantic summer transfer window, and one of their signings has just received big praise from Paul Merson.

The deadline has now passed for Chelsea to make any more signings, which may a relief for some supporters to hear. However, there should be some frustration that they didn’t get a high-profile No.9 in at Stamford Bridge.

Victor Osimhen and Ivan Toney were strongly linked with the Blues on yesterday’s deadline day, but Nicolas Jackson will continue be the main man to lead the line in West London.

Journalist Miguel Delaney reported via X that Chelsea and Osimhen were £100,000-a-week apart during contract negotiations, so he ended up staying in Italy with Napoli.

Paul Merson hails Pedro Neto transfer

Paul Merson has named Chelsea’s deal for Pedro Neto as one of the top three transfers of the summer. In addition, he included Dominic Solanke to Tottenham and Max Kilman to West Ham.

Merson said via X after deadline day: “… I like Neto at Chelsea. I think if they can keep him fit and he can keep getting on that football pitch, he’s unplayable. I think he’s top drawer. That’s the only problem, though, is if they can keep him fit.”

Pedro Neto the standout signing

We agree that Neto is clearly the standout transfer from Chelsea this summer. If he can stay fit and avoid injuries, the £54m attacker (Sky Sports) could turn out to be a complete bargain.

The 24-year-old Portuguese winger has proven in recent years as a Wolverhampton Wanderers player he can rip it up in the Premier League. Unfortunately, injuries has held him back so far from really kicking on.

There’s plenty of competition from places now at the Bridge with all the attacking talent, but we’re confident Neto can nail down a permanent spot in the XI when he’s available.

Suddenly, Chelsea’s attack is starting to look quite exciting when you start Neto, Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson and Noni Madueke together. Will the club regret not adding more senior cover in the striker position, though.
