Chelsea looked poised to sell one of their Cobham stars this summer, however a change of heart from both the club and the player have seen plans change.

The path for academy stars has become clearer to the first team since Enzo Maresca took over as first team manager. Tyrique George and Josh Acheampong both became regulars in the matchday squad after their promotions last season.

However, previous reports have stated that those at Cobham are losing faith in regular opportunities with the first team squad, and this has seen a number of them choose to pursue their dreams elsewhere.

Rio Ngumoha is the key name which comes to mind. He is currently making a real impact under Arne Slot on Liverpool’s pre-season tour.

Chelsea change mind and choose to loan Leo Castledine

The same looked on the cards for Leo Castledine, who despite making his Chelsea debut under Mauricio Pochettino has spent recent months on loan elsewhere.

It was recently claimed that Castledine was prepared to leave permanently this summer, with Huddersfield Town keen on signing him.

However, as per The Athletic, the young midfielder is now set to join the League One side on loan, giving all parties another chance to make a decision after he plays a full season in the EFL.

Sources at Chelsea say Castledine is ‘highly-rated’ within the club (OneFootball), and it is clear that they are not willing to part ways with him permanently just yet.

Castledine’s interesting 2024/25 season

Castledine spent last season on loan to Shrewsbury, where he seemed to become one of their most important players in the heart of midfield.

His importance was shown by the fact Castledine picked up an overuse injury during his time on loan, which forced him to return to Stamford Bridge early.

Chelsea will hope that this lesson has been learned as his future employers look to take him on, and that his fitness will not be put at risk again.

It is likely going to need to be a super season for the youngster to convince the club that they should take a chance on him going forwards
