The 2005/06 season is one Chelsea fans can look back on with fond memories following their Premier League success.

Chelsea won the title for a second consecutive year under Jose Mourinho, finishing the campaign with 91 points.

The Special One had an incredible team, boasting the likes of John Terry, who captained the side to the Premier League crown, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba.

It has now been revealed that some members of that title-winning squad were some of the most valuable players in world football at the time. The season before, Chelsea conceded just 15 goals in the top flight, a record Terry cannot ever see being broken.

John Terry, Michael Essien and Shaun Wright-Phillips make most valuable XI

According to Transfermarkt, Terry and Michael Essien had values of €28m (£23.2m) and €38m (£31.5m) respectively during the 2005/06 season.

It made them two of the most valuable footballers in the world back then, with both men making the website’s most valuable XI for that campaign.

It is not a shock, as Terry and Essien were two of the best players in their position during that period. What is surprising is Shaun Wright-Phillips‘ inclusion after the retired England international, who had a value of €31.5m (£26.1m), finished the season without scoring a single goal.

Of course, Chelsea signed the former winger for £21m in the summer of 2005, which has probably been factored in. He finished his career at Stamford Bridge with just 10 goals to his name.

Who is Chelsea’s most valuable player today?

Chelsea have a squad with many talented players and paid £115m for Moises Caicedo and £107m for Enzo Fernandez.

However, the MVP in Enzo Maresca‘s group right now is undoubtedly Cole Palmer, who is the main man at Chelsea presently and has a contract until 2033, protecting his value.

The 22-year-old did not win either of the Premier League Player of the Season or PFA Player of the Year awards for the 2023/24 campaign, but he was still arguably the best footballer in the English top flight.

In 33 Premier League appearances for Chelsea, Palmer scored 22 goals and provided 11 assists. No other player managed to record more goal contributions than the England international.

Palmer had a quiet game versus Liverpool, but there is no doubt that he is the best player Chelsea have today.
