Chelsea have just one player called up to England under-17 squad despite ‘historic’ win in U18 Premier League, no place for ‘intelligent’ midfielder

Chelsea’s youngsters grabbed the headlines recently with an exceptional victory in the Under 18 Premier League.

The young Blues picked up a 3-1 win against Leicester City’s U18 side, despite the fact the majority of their starters were being held back for an FA Youth Cup tie against Manchester United.

Academy players as young as 14 years of age were on display in what was described by Felix Johnston as a ‘historic’ win away from home, leaving plenty to be excited about the future of Chelsea.

One Chelsea youngster selected for England Under 17 side despite historic win

While previous reports have stated that the academy are losing confidence in their players being given the appropriate path to the first team, it is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore some of their superb achievements.

Off the back of a number of Under 17s starring a year above at club level, it could be expected that some would be selected to feature for the England squad who have been named for their upcoming fixtures against the Netherlands.

However, as per the official announcement on the England website, only goalkeeper Freddy Bernal has been named in the travelling squad.

This means some quality young Blues have been left out, including midfielder Landon Emenalo, who featured for the England U17s as recently as November.

The son of former technical director Michael Emenalo, the defensive-minded star has five appearances for the U17 side, and has described himself as an ‘intelligent’ player to Premier Sports Talent.

Who are Chelsea’s most promising youngsters?

With injuries beginning to affect Enzo Maresca’s first team squad, attention is turning to the academy to see if anyone can make an impact.

One of the most promising players is Shim Mheuka. Josh Acheampong has already tipped the forward to break into the first team regularly soon, after he made his debut in the Conference League earlier this season.

Tyrique George mentioned Ishe Samuels-Smith as a future star. The left-back was in the matchday squad for the defeat to Brighton in the FA Cup.
