Chelsea have just quietly extended 21-year-old player’s contract, he was linked with exit

Reports have claimed that Chelsea have now triggered an extension in Ian Maatsen’s contract.

According to the Evening Standard, they have added another year onto his deal that will keep him at the club until Summer 2025.

There were real fears amongst Chelsea supporters that they were priming to lose Maatsen in one of the two upcoming transfer windows, despite his impressive start to life as a first team member.

Someone who has been particularly impressed is Mauricio Pochettino, with the manager wowed by his displays in pre-season in particular.

However, there has been no news that he has been willing to extend his Chelsea contract, which was originally expected to run out at the end of this season.

With that in mind, the club accepted a deadline day bid from Burnley for his services, however the 21-year-old dug his heels in and remained at the club.

He is yet to start in the Premier League though, and it does feel at times like his situation off the pitch is beginning to impact his one on it.

This may soon be put to a stop amid reports that the club have decided to trigger the extension clause that they had in his contract.

Reports had claimed that a number of big teams have been interested in his services. Manchester City and Barcelona are just two of the sides who have been linked.

The latter were almost certainly eyeing a deal on the cheap, monitoring his contract situation closely.

It remains to be seen whether this is to buy more time for negotiations over a new deal for the Dutchman, or if instead they are just looking to increase his price for a potential suitor when the window opens again in January.
