Chelsea suggested to have offered ‘crazy’ contract to Premier League teenager

Chelsea’s aggressive youth recruitment drive has been laid bare following suggestions that the Blues may have offered a £50k-a-week pre-contract package to a teenager.

The current youth strategy at Chelsea balances aggressive global recruitment with the preservation of their Cobham pipeline. Under the guiding vision of Joe Shields and Glenn van der Kraan, the Blues’ policy prioritises signing the world’s most coveted under-21 talents, which has seen the likes of Estevao Willian and Kendry Paez make their way to the English capital.

In terms of the Cobham batch, Shumaira Mheuka netted over 20 goals and earned senior first-team recognition. Alongside him, Jesse Derry and Reggie Walsh have already made their senior bows, while Ibrahim Rabbaj continues to make a name for himself at club and international level.

And with the summer transfer window upon us, the revolution isn’t slowing down.

Chelsea suggested to have made an offer for Josh Abe

Athletic reporter James Pearce has been talking on the Walk On Liverpool podcast, where he suggests that Chelsea may have made a £50k per week offer to Josh Abe.

However, he is set to stay at Liverpool, as they’re believed to have fended off interest.

“Of course, although what a scholar earns in Premier League football is like there’s parity across the board. I think it’s about £1,200 a month or something. But what you can do is when you get players signed up to a scholarship, you can do a pre-contract for their first pro deal when they turn 17.

“And that is obviously where crazy sums of money are thrown around. I know Josh was offered up to 50 grand a week as a first professional deal for when he turned 17, which will be July 2027. Liverpool certainly wouldn’t have gone that high, but in the end, the package they did put together convinced him to turn down that interest from City, Chelsea and others in the Premier League and commit his future to the club.

“I think from speaking to people close to him, the pathway was key in terms of, I think he’s a right-winger who loves cutting in on his left foot. Of course, Liverpool have just lost someone who played, who did all right in that particular role wide on the right. There’s not too many others coming through.”

Chelsea have high hopes for Josh Acheampong under Xabi Alonso…

Where does Acheampong fit in with Chelsea’s plans for 2026/27?

Could the mystery club be Chelsea?

Given Chelsea’s track record under BlueCo ownership, they are absolutely the prime suspect for launching that staggering £50,000-a-week offer.

During the process of the Chelsea ownership vacuuming up the world’s most elite teenage prodigies, they are never afraid to weaponise massive financial packages to win those battles.

Having lost Rio Ngumoha to Liverpool’s academy just a couple of years ago, Chelsea had plenty of motivation to exact some revenge. Offering a lucrative pre-contract to steal away Kirkby’s absolute prize asset perfectly aligns with their high-spending, youth-centric blueprint.
