One thing that has been notable about Chelsea over the last couple of seasons is just how young their matchday squad tends to be.

After the departure of Thiago Silva over the summer, this has somehow managed to drop considerably lower, with them boasting the youngest squad in the Premier League by some distance.

Enzo Maresca is doing a very good job getting the best out of them so far. He himself is in just his first season as a top flight manager in England.

The boss has named a very consistent starting side for Premier League games, with some featuring in every single game so far.

One of those is Levi Colwill, who is now starting to perform at the level many Chelsea fans knew was in him.

Levi Colwill named in Premier League U21 Team of the Season so far

The England international has formed a strong partnership at the back with Wesley Fofana, although that will be broken next time out against Liverpool after the latter’s suspension.

The brilliance of Colwill though has not gone unnoticed, with WhoScored naming him in their U21 Premier League Team of the Season so far.

He is joined in the side by Lewis Hall, a player who left Chelsea permanently over the summer.

Maresca sees Colwill as pure centre-back

Colwill featured a lot at left-back last season under Mauricio Pochettino, however it has been clear that Maresca has only seen him as a player to be at the heart of his defence.

Chelsea fans were absolutely in awe of his last performance against Nottingham Forest, with him making a huge block in the first half that could well have saved them a point in the end.

One thing that has been clear this season is just how good the young defender’s passing is, with him frequently breaking the lines and starting attacks from the back that have been a serious benefit for the side.
