Chelsea’s stance on Levi Colwill amid poor form and whether he could be sold this summer

It has been a rough few weeks for everyone at Chelsea, however no one‘s form seems to have dropped as far as defender Levi Colwill’s.

The England International has been a near no ever present in the Premier League this season, partly down to injuries suffered by Benoit Badiashile.

The Frenchman and his countryman Wesley Fofana have been missing for a number of months now. Enzo Maresca hinted April would be the return date for those currently out at Stamford Bridge.

Colwill has come in for far more criticism than most for his recent displays. Gary Neville described Colwill as weak in the Blues’ damming loss to Brighton.

This result saw Chelsea drop out of the top four, and perhaps leave them with further regrets they did not keep hold of Renato Veiga in January.

Chelsea not thinking of selling Levi Colwill despite poor form

Veiga wanted to play at centre-back at Stamford Bridge, however Colwill’s firm grasp on the position made it difficult for anyone to take it off him.

The general feeling around Chelsea is that the Englishman is a key part of their project going forwards. Colwill was described as untouchable last year.

Graeme Bailey has told The Chelsea Chronicle that there has been no talk of this stance changing, and he will not be one of the names they are looking to get rid of when the season ends.

He said: “From what I’ve seen, I think he’s been attacked in the media. Not heard anything about him. The whole squad is constantly under review, I haven’t heard there’s been any disappointment in Colwill.

“I think he’s had a pretty good season. I think they’ll want to add to the defence, but Colwill isn’t one of the ones on the chopping block.”

Enzo Maresca’s thoughts on Levi Colwill

Despite poor form, Maresca has the backing of Chelsea owners as the manager of the club, with them desperate to keep a head coach for more than one season.

Maresca is notably a fan of Colwill, with him praising how far the defender has come in becoming a leader in a youthful squad.

He said to The Evening Standard: “I can see the leader day by day, since we started in pre-season, something that he can improve in terms of leadership. He is improving a lot

“Levi, even if he is not wearing the armband, he is one of the captains and in the future, he could be a captain of this club. Since we started, he is improving a lot.”

It is clear the manager’s favoured backline is Colwill and Fofana, with it perhaps not long until they are able to be paired together again in West London.
