Levi Colwill hasn’t changed since Alan Shearer criticism over a year ago, he’s still got one ‘bad habit’ at Chelsea

Chelsea as a whole have really struggled of late, losing to Brighton & Hove Albion once again last Friday.

Their 3-0 defeat at the Amex saw them drop to sixth place in the Premier League table and out of the Champions League spots.

Right now, Levi Colwill is one player in particular who is really having a tough time.

Colwill was at fault for Brighton’s third goal and had a poor match overall. Last season, Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer did not like something he saw from him in one of Chelsea‘s defeats, and the young central defender is yet to iron it out of his game.

When Alan Shearer slammed ‘really weak’ Levi Colwill

In Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United in December 2023, Colwill was also responsible for one of the goals his side conceded that night.

He was beaten too easily by Scott McTominay, wanting a foul after the midfielder headed home to put United in front and ultimately win them all three points.

Shearer was not too impressed with Colwill’s defending, saying: “Really weak defending here from Colwill. Both of them were at it. Both of them have their arms on each other. It went to VAR but it was never a foul, it was never going to be enough to be turned over.

“Defenders should be dealing with it. But credit to McTominay, he wants it more than the defender and it wins the game for them.”

Fast forward to this season, and Chelsea fans are still seeing similar from the 21-year-old.

Levi Colwill still getting shoved off the ball too easily

In the build-up to Brighton’s third goal against Chelsea last Friday, Colwill was knocked off the ball while trying to carry it out of defence.

Instead of getting back up and trying to regain possession, the England international remained on the ground, asking for a foul.

It is something that former Manchester United defender Gary Neville feels he is seeing too often from Colwill, describing it as a “bad habit”.

Clearly, then, Colwill has not learnt from that goal he and Chelsea conceded against United over a year ago.

He is still just 21, though, and has a lot of potential. At some point, you would expect him to iron out what really has become a bad habit. Enzo Maresca and Chelsea really need the centre-half to.
