Danny Murphy believes that most Chelsea supporters would much rather have Conor Gallagher in the side than their current star.
The Blues cashed in on homegrown talent Conor Gallagher in the summer by selling him to Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.
The 24-year-old midfielder came through the Chelsea academy before becoming a first-team star at Stamford Bridge, making 95 senior appearances before his sale.
Gallagher believes he would’ve suited Enzo Maresca’s style. In fairness, it’s already pretty clear that the England international fits the tactics of Atletico boss Diego Simeone.

Conor Gallagher over Enzo Fernandez
TalkSPORT pundit Danny Murphy thinks that the majority of the Chelsea fanbase would prefer Gallagher to current Blues midfielder Enzo Fernandez.
Murphy told talkSPORT: “Although they’re different players, I don’t think there’s many Chelsea [fans] that wouldn’t swap Fernandez for Gallagher right now… He’s one of those players who, when he’s on your team, we know what we’re getting from him.”
We suspect the Gallagher talk will continue in the media as long as he’s impressing in Madrid, but Chelsea have entered a new chapter without him. At this stage, it doesn’t really matter if he was rightly or wrongly sold because the focus must be on the pitch.
The fact of the matter is that there’s still a lot of talent in Chelsea’s midfield, even with the departure of Gallagher.
Enzo Fernandez is key for Chelsea
Fernandez missed Chelsea’s win over Bournemouth through illness, but he’s been an important player in the early weeks of the season. It’s pretty obvious that he’s quickly become a favourite under Maresca with his regular selection.
The 23-year-old central midfielder is offering something both offensively and defensively for the Blues with a lot of work.
Andy Townsend previously described Fernandez as a “gifted footballer”, which is certainly a fair assessment of his ability. We’re greedy to see much more from him, especially when he’s wearing the captain’s armband in the absence of Reece James.
