Dermot Gallagher says whether Wesley Fofana should have conceded a penalty in Chelsea vs Leicester

Chelsea survived a very late scare at the weekend as they returned to winning ways in the Premier League against Leicester City.

A dominant 90 minutes saw them leading 2-0 late on thanks to goals from Nicolas Jackson and Enzo Fernandez, with Enzo Maresca’s tactics seeming to suit Fernandez perfectly.

Romeo Lavia conceded a last-minute penalty to keep the Foxes interested, however Maresca was able to take all three points away from his former side, ending his replacement Steve Cooper’s time in the dugout in the process.

There were a number of controversial moments at the King Power Stadium at the weekend. Mark Halsey has said Cole Palmer’s career could have been ended after a horror tackle on him that evaded a red card in the first half.

Chelsea told no penalty on Wesley Fofana was the correct decision

There was a VAR check for a Leicester penalty after former player Wesley Fofana collided with Stephy Mavididi in the box.

Former Premier League official Dermot Gallagher has stated that the correct decision was reached though.

He told Sky Sports’ Ref Watch: “It’s not a penalty. Fofana just stands his ground. He realises he could be in trouble if he dangles a leg and cleverly stands his ground. He doesn’t make any challenge.

“And before you say to me he has to get out of the way, there is nothing in the laws to say you cannot stand your ground. Mavididi goes into Fofana.”

Chelsea will feel hard done by this season when it comes to decisions made by referees against them.

Many believe Lisandro Martinez should have seen red for a challenge on Cole Palmer that left Enzo Maresca furious. The superstar almost missed the draw with Arsenal as a result.

The Blues also believe they should have had a penalty in the narrow defeat to Liverpool, which could have had a significant impact on their position in the league and potential challenge at the top of the table.

Many sides will feel as if they are constantly on the wrong end of decisions by officials, however the evidence Chelsea fans can provide is certainly high.
