Former referee says ‘phenomenal’ Chelsea player could have had his career ended vs Leicester

Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey has been discussing one tackle he saw during Chelsea’s 2-1 win against Leicester City.

It proved to be a good day for Chelsea, who managed to move to just a point behind Manchester City following their victory at the King Power Stadium.

Enzo Fernandez was excellent, scoring one goal and registering one assist. Fernandez also covered a lot of ground on the afternoon, which would have delighted Enzo Maresca.

However, the 44-year-old would not have been happy about one challenge Cole Palmer received.

Mark Halsey reacts to Wilfred Ndidi’s tackle on Cole Palmer

During the game, there was one tackle where Leicester midfielder Wilfred Ndidi sent his boot into Palmer’s Achilles.

The Nigerian only received a yellow card, but Halsey felt that the VAR should have recommended a review after what he has deemed as a “career-threatening challenge”.

Speaking to The Sun, Halsey said: “That was the worst challenge of the weekend. And I was very, very surprised that Paul Tierney, the VAR, did not recommend a review.

“That was a career-threatening challenge. It’s the training and education of VAR, when to come in and when not to come in.”

Alan Shearer thinks Palmer is “phenomenal” at everything he does, but the attacking midfielder’s form has dipped a bit over Chelsea’s last few games.

Palmer has scored just one goal in his last five matches, which is a rare run of form for him.

Cole Palmer’s numbers vs Leicester

Palmer may not be at his best right now, but he still managed to make an impact at Leicester.

For example, the 22-year-old registered three key passes, and had Noni Madueke got out of the way in time, he also would have had a goal.

Madueke blocked Palmer’s goal-bound shot when the score was still just 1-0. It could have proved costly but Chelsea got away with it in the end thanks to Fernandez’s header in the 75th minute.

At least the England international did not get injured, though, which could have been the case after Ndidi’s poor challenge.

Palmer will have to get used to that sort of rough treatment, especially if referees are only going to hand out yellows for it.
