Enzo Maresca was open and honest in his press conference ahead of the Brighton clash as he spoke about one of his Chelsea players in particular.
The Blues head into the Brighton game in fine form after a 5-0 win against Barrow midweek.
Of course, the Seagulls provide a completely different challenge for Chelsea, but to see some of the more fringe players get minutes and build some confidence is a positive for Enzo Maresca.
One player who got the captain’s armband was Ben Chilwell, despite the saga which saw him spend time away from the first-team.
Interestingly, the Chelsea boss brought up the situation involving the Englishman at his press conference before the Brighton game and had some interesting things to say.

Enzo Maresca admits he made a mistake with Ben Chilwell
It isn’t every day a manager comes out and admits a mistake they made, but that’s exactly what Enzo Maresca has done.
Ben Chilwell was training away from the first team earlier on in the summer with Raheem Sterling, ahead of a possible move away from Stamford Bridge.
It was claimed that Chilwell was attracting interest from Manchester United during the summer transfer window, but nothing developed, and he stayed at Chelsea.
Now, when speaking in his press conference ahead of Brighton (as per Football London), Maresca stated that everyone makes mistakes and the decision on Chilwell was one of them.
“We all make mistakes. I had to make a decision; sometimes they are good and sometimes not. There is not any bad intention from me. It was just to try and think of the best thing for the club.”
Ben Chilwell’s resurrection against Barrow
Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Chelsea’s plans are to move Chilwell on in the January transfer window, despite him now working his way back into the fold.
Maresca admitted that using Chilwell in the Carabao Cup was planned, but it remains to be seen as to how much he’ll play in the Premier League.
Marc Cucurella has been completely transformed this season under Maresca, so knocking him out of his place won’t be easy.
However, no one would have expected Chilwell, who signed for £50 million, to even be playing for Chelsea this season after this summer’s antics, so weird things can happen.
