Enzo Maresca insists Chelsea ‘need to learn’ to do something they’ve only done once in the Premier League this season

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has explained the one thing his young side desperately needs to learn to do.

Enzo Maresca, 45, is currently going through his toughest spell yet as the Chelsea manager.

The Italian boss got off to a blistering start in the first half of the season during his debut year at Stamford Bridge, but the results have been a lot more inconsistent in the last couple of months.

The Blues were dumped out in the fourth round stage of both the League Cup and FA Cup this season. Therefore, it adds a lot of pressure to the club’s campaign in the Premier League and Conference League.

As it stands, Maresca’s side go into Friday night’s league trip to Brighton sitting fourth in the division table, but the competition for Champions League qualification is stiff.

Chelsea will soon welcome back a few players from injury, which will hopefully given everyone a boost as the team searches for much-needed consistency.

Enzo Maresca shares what his Chelsea team must learn to do

Maresca has shared the message to his Chelsea side that they must learn the skill to start winning matches by a 1-0 scoreline.

Maresca told Sky Sports: “We need to learn to win games 1-0. Big teams know how to win 1-0. Sometimes when you are winning 1-0 and there’s 10-15 minutes to go, the way they manage the game and the ball, kills the game. It’s something that we need to learn.

“The reason why I said we are not still a club that we can compete for the Premier League or an important title is because we need to learn different things.

“One of the things that we need to learn is how to win games, how to be ruthless and win the games, sometimes 1-0, to be nasty in some moments. It’s something that we’re going to learn for sure.”

In fairness, Chelsea have only recorded one 1-0 win in the Premier League so far this season. Back on 14 September, the Blues picked up a 1-0 away victory at Bournemouth to earn three points.

Maresca’s side have only kept four clean sheets in their 24 league games, which highlights an obvious problem when it comes to conceding goals nearly every match.

Maresca recently confirmed Filip Jorgensen is now Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper after overtaking Robert Sanchez in the pecking order. Let’s wait and see if that has any direct impact on the defensive record.

We know that the Chelsea ownership have been ruthless with managers during their short time in charge, so there’s bound to be a few nerves from supporters when the team goes through a poor run.

Interesting, before a ball was kicked this season, Jamie Carragher predicted Maresca wouldn’t survive the entire year at Chelsea. He said back in August: “I’d be surprised if Maresca’s the manager there at the end of the season, very surprised.”

Hopefully, the Blues can get back on track after a challenging winter period with the results on the pitch.

We’d urge Maresca to start trying a few different things because the attack looks a bit predictable and the defence is too easy for opponents to cut through.
