Enzo Maresca states the two things Chelsea must do to catch up to Manchester City

It has been seven years since Chelsea last won the Premier League title. In that time, Manchester City have claimed an incredible six.

Pep Guardiola’s side have won the previous four titles and will be looking to make it five in a row this season. After finishing sixth last term, Chelsea will just be happy to qualify for the Champions League.

However, going forward, the club’s owners will want to see the team challenging for the title again, especially after all of their investment.

Enzo Maresca has now shared what his side need to do to catch up to City and Arsenal.

Chelsea still far away from Manchester City and Arsenal

According to Maresca, there is still quite a big gap between Chelsea and City and Arsenal.

To close it, the new Chelsea manager has made it clear that his team need both attack and defend better.

Speaking in his Barrow pre-match press conference, Maresca told football.london and other outlets: “I said that we are ahead of where we expected to be today. Not in terms of results but in terms of the way the team are progressing and the way the team are playing.

“In terms of results, I still think that we are far from this kind of teams, like City and Arsenal because we need to learn many, many things and we need to improve many things; attacking better, defending better.”

Maresca wants to give minutes to Ben Chilwell against Barrow tonight after previously freezing out the left-back.

Chelsea’s attack is improving

Under the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital ownership, Chelsea’s attack has gradually improved.

For example, back in the 2022/23 season, the Blues only managed to score 38 goals in the Premier League. A year later, that tally went up to 77.

This term, Chelsea are already on 11 goals after just five games, with their forward line really impressing at the moment.

Joe Cole thinks Chelsea’s attack can harm any defence in the world right now, which is a big claim. But it is hard not to get excited about it.

Still, if Chelsea want to get to City’s level, then more improvement in attack and defence will be needed. For years now, the Citizens have just been in another dimension compared to their Premier League rivals, while Arsenal are also another team who are superior at this moment in time.
