Gabriele Marcotti has named the quartet he considers to be Chelsea’s most ‘technically gifted’ players, but he’s said that only one of them starts in the team’s best starting XI right now.
For all the criticism that’s been fired at the Blues for their transfer business in the last couple of years, the current Chelsea squad is definitely stacked with loads of talent. It now falls on Enzo Maresca in the manager’s dugout to find the right formula on the pitch.
ESPN claims that Maresca has been given a top-four target by Chelsea, which is fair enough when you look at the ability in the group. Can they find the consistency that’s evaded them in recent seasons, though?

Chelsea’s most techinical players
ESPN pundit Gabriele Marcotti has named the four players at Chelsea he believes have the most technical ability: Cole Palmer, Joao Felix, Christopher Nkunku and Jadon Sancho. Unfortunately, he’s pointed out that there may only be room for Palmer from the aforementioned attackers in the Blues’ preferred starting line-up.
Marcotti told ESPN: “Chelsea’s four most technically gifted players, just technical ability. Whatever order you want to put them in. Cole Palmer, Joao Felix, Christopher Nkunku and Jadon Sancho, for me. Of those four, only one of them starts. That’s another weird team building dysfunction.”
We’re inclined to agree when it comes to the selection of Chelsea’s most technical players. For what it’s worth, teammates such as Enzo Fernandez, Pedro Neto, Noni Madueke and Nicolas Jackson may deserve a mention as well.
Competition at Chelsea
It’s pretty obvious that Maresca has such a difficult task fitting everyone into the starting XI, especially in the forward positions. Let’s remember that such a hectic fixture schedule should allow a good amount of rest and rotation, though.
If you look at Manchester City, Pep Guardiola isn’t being constantly grilled by the media on how he can keep all of his stars happy. Premier League champions Man City have a squad that includes talents such as Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Savinho, Erling Haaland, Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan and Jeremy Doku.
It’s the job of the manager to keep an entire squad engaged even when they’re not getting the minutes they want.
