‘Exciting’… Glen Johnson super impressed by £26m Chelsea player who’s so great to watch

Glen Johnson admits he’s really enjoyed watching one Chelsea defender so far this season.

Malo Gusto, who joined the Blues last summer in a £26 million deal from Ligue 1 club Lyon (Sky Sports), is making a fantastic impression during his debut year at Stamford Bridge.

The 20-year-old right-back has been a regular starter for the Blues, with club captain Reece James missing through injury for large spells so far.

For Gusto, he’s definitely seized the opportunity to impress. Let’s remember this is his very first taste of English football, too!

Glen Johnson, who’s a former Chelsea full-back, really likes what he’s seen from Gusto lately.

The French youngster is a huge threat when he joins in with attacks, creating seven assists in 28 Blues appearances. On top of that, he defends so aggressively and intelligently in his own half.

When asked about Gusto this season, Johnson told Squawka: “Yeah, well, obviously we saw glimpses of him before, but it’s a bit stop start, stop start for him because obviously Reece was the main man. But it’s good to see him have a run of games and get some form and get some confidence. And like I say, he has been good to watch. You know, he’s bags of energy, he’s good on the ball, exciting when he goes forward. So I think he’s looked really good, and like I say, it’s good for him because he has had to wait a long time for his chance. But for me, at the moment, he’s taken it.”

Malo Gusto is great to watch

We agree that Gusto’s a delight to watch with his all-action performances at right-back on a consistent basis.

Aside from Cole Palmer and Conor Gallagher, we’d rate Gusto as Chelsea’s best player this season.

We think Blues head coach Mauricio Pochettino is going to have a major selection headache when James is back fit and available.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano shared via X this week that Chelsea are ‘super happy’ with the investment of Gusto last summer. Our guess is the entire fanbase feels the exact same way, too!

It’s another example that not all of Chelsea’s signings under this ownership have been flops. In fact, Gusto’s signature in a £26m deal feels like one of the smartest investments in a long time.
