Fabrizio Romano offers latest update on a new contract for Mason Mount at Chelsea

Fabrizio Romano has claimed on Twitter that there is still a big gap between Chelsea and Mason Mount regarding a new contract.

The England international has been involved in quite the saga in recent weeks regarding his future, and if it lies at Stamford Bridge.

He has so far been unwilling to meet the club’s demands that he commits his long-term future to the club in a similar way to how Reece James recently did.

It has been reported that the 24-year-old has been offered similar terms to his fellow academy graduate, however has refused to accept up to now.

This has seen talk about where he could play his football next season. It has been reported that Liverpool in particular are interested in bringing him in.

Mount not close to new contract

There’s still hope amongst many that a conclusion can be reached that will keep him at Stamford Bridge for the long-term. He has been an incredibly important player to a number of managers at the club already in the early stages of his career.

However, Romano has claimed that up to now the chances of him leaving are continuing to rise.

He said: “There’s still big gap in the negotiations between Chelsea and Mason Mount, as new deal is again far from being agreed.

“No final decision yet but chances of MM leaving Chelsea are increasing — Mount will be on the market if new deal is not agreed before the summer.”

Chelsea letting the Englishman leave is sure to strengthen a rival in the Premier League, which may be a bad decision by the club.

Todd Boehly has made it clear though that he is set to not allow players to enter the last season of their contract in the future after being annoyed at the handling of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen a year ago.
