The manager has had a growing injury list to try and deal with, with the figure reaching as many as 10 before the last game.

Noni Madueke and Lesley Ugochukwu are the latest to be added to the list, with the latter suffering a muscle tear.

Of all the injuries the Blues have suffered this season, none have hurt more than Nkunku, who is still yet to make his competitive debut for the club.

The France international was brought in as the marquee addition to the attack, and therefore holds a lot of promise regarding his return.

Romano has now claimed that this could occur as early as Sunday, with there being plenty of optimism in the camp.

He said: “Christopher Nkunku could be in the Chelsea squad this weekend; the feeling is optimistic, but let’s see.”

Even if he is not at his absolute top fitness level, a place in the squad could help the Blues in terms of having a senior player ready to enter the fray.

Their bench against United consisted of a number of young stars including Leo Castledine, with them only making two subs as a result of this.

With a more favourable run of games in the near future, it could actually be the perfect time to introduce the big summer signing to the Premier League.
