‘Fantastic’ Chelsea player says he still doesn’t think he’s made it yet in football, he’s played 44 games for them

Chelsea’s first-team star has made the extraordinary claim that he still doesn’t have the mindset that he’s made it as a footballer.

In general, the Chelsea squad is extremely young and still lacking success at the highest level. Of course, there’s some exceptions such as World Cup champion Enzo Fernandez and European Championship winner Marc Cucurella.

Enzo Maresca is the Blues manager tasked with gelling together the young group and shooting for the stars. So far, the Italian head coach has started well in the opening few months and expectation is rising around Stamford Bridge.

Levi Colwill still doesn’t think he’s made it

Chelsea star Levi Colwill, 21, has made the fascinating claim that he doesn’t feel like he’s made it as a footballer.

The talented centre-back is now a regular for his club side, playing 44 first-team games for the Blues. Also, he’s represented England’s senior national side four times.

However, Chelsea academy graduate isn’t resting on his laurels and isn’t satisfied yet.

When asked at what point did he think he made it as a footballer, Colwill told Sky Sports Football: “I still don’t. Anything can happen in football. There’s been stranger things that have happened, so you’ve just got to keep working hard and pushing yourself.

“Maybe when I was about 16, I did have a chance. Before that, from 14 to 16, I had confidence issues where I struggled in the academy. From 16 I found myself and realised how my body works. From then I realised I could be something here if I wanted.”

Colwill, who’s started every league game of the 2024/25 season so far, is shining in the heart of the Blues defence. The young centre-back is thriving in Maresca’s side and playing some great football.

Tim Sherwood thinks Chelsea’s Colwill has got loads better, naming him as the Premier League’s most improved player this year.

His partnership alongside Wesley Fofana in the backline is one that’s definitely improving, so hopefully it can be a long-term answer moving forward.

Levi Colwill should be considered for Chelsea captain

From Colwill’s quotes above, it’s clear that he’s got a wise head on such young shoulders. The central defender isn’t allowing his success to impact him in a negative way and is desperate for so much more.

John Obi Mikel claims Colwill has been “fantastic” for Chelsea, especially in terms of showing leadership on the pitch and leading from the front.

In terms of this campaign, the England international has been one of Chelsea’s most consistent performers.

With Reece James regularly sidelined through injury, it may be worth Chelsea appointing a new permanent club captain. Colwill belongs in the thick of the conversation if they do decide to go down that route.
