Former Chelsea defender explains what Todd Boehly hasn’t done well after Stamford Bridge protest

Chelsea have been in the headlines this week and not for the right reasons despite the club winning their last match.

Chelsea were able to beat Southampton 4-0 on Tuesday and climb back into the top four before Manchester City’s 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

However, before the game, fans protested against Todd Boehly and the rest of Chelsea’s ownership.

The Blues have not won any trophies or qualified for the Champions League since Boehly and Behdad Eghbali took over the club, and supporters are not happy about that. Chelsea fans have been calling for Luis Campos, too, so are clearly not impressed with their current sporting directors either.

Scott Minto claims Chelsea haven’t spent well

Under Boehly and Eghbali, Chelsea have made a lot of signings. Some have worked out, including Cole Palmer.

In September, former Chelsea defender Scott Minto lauded Palmer, stating that he would pick the attacking midfielder over Erling Haaland. It shows how good he has been for the Blues.

There have been plenty of other arrivals, though, who have not performed. And that has got Minto talking.

Speaking on talkSPORT about how Chelsea have spent their money, the 1997 FA Cup winner said: “Talking about the fans protest, I think we do need to be careful. These are guys who have come in at a very difficult time for Chelsea Football Club, they’ve put two and a half billion down on the table.

“They said they’d spend another billion and a half, well they’ve gone 1.2. I just think, like a lot of people, they haven’t done with that money, they haven’t bought well.”

One player who cost the Blues a fair bit of money is Joao Felix. They signed him from Atletico Madrid for £45m last summer, but the forward is already at AC Milan.

Felix’s loan at Milan is not going well, though, so the 25-year-old could return to Stamford Bridge instead of remaining at the San Siro. Whatever happens, having loaned out Felix already, he is the sort of business that Minto and others can criticise.

Danny Murphy on Chelsea’s recruitment

Ex-Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has not been too impressed with Chelsea’s recent transfer dealings either.

He has criticised their decision to overspend on young talent while getting rid of so many of their experienced players.

“Somebody has made the decision to go a way that nobody has ever done before and expect success,”Murphy said on talkSPORT. “They’ve overspent on talent and potential.

“They’ve got rid of experienced players like Thiago Silva, Jorginho and [Mateo] Kovacic. Kovacic left and won the league with City playing nearly all the games. It’s strange.”

Right now, Chelsea’s squad is certainly lacking a balance between youth and experience. Hopefully that gets addressed in the next transfer window.

Chelsea have shortlisted Marc Guehi and he is 24 now with over 100 Premier League appearances. The central defender is definitely someone who could bring some more know-how to Stamford Bridge.
