Frank Leboeuf shares whether he thinks Moises Caicedo should’ve been sent off for Chelsea vs Newcastle

Frank Leboeuf has delivered his verdict on whether or not Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo should’ve been sent off against Newcastle United.

Chelsea and Newcastle played out an enthralling Carabao Cup quarter-final tie last night at Stamford Bridge, with the hosts eventually running out as winners in a penalty shootout.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side recorded a much-needed success to keep momentum in the season, plus to enter the semi-final draw for the League Cup.

However, some Newcastle fans may be aggrieved about a challenge from Moises Caicedo on Anthony Gordon inside the opening couple of minutes.

Blues midfielder Caicedo received a yellow card after a late challenge on Newcastle’s Gordon. Incidentally, there was no VAR involved in yesterday’s game to intervene for a possible dismissal.

Red card

ESPN pundit Frank Leboeuf was asked whether or not Caicedo should have been sent off against Newcastle for the foul on Gordon.

He told ESPN: “Yeah, overall I would say. At first sight I would say no. When you see the replay you cannot avoid the fact that he cannot catch the ball, he goes for contact, he goes for a bad one.”

It would’ve been a totally different contest had Chelsea gone down to 10 men in the opening minutes.

Instead, Mykhailo Mudryk’s late equaliser cancelled out Callum Wilson’s goal to leave it at 1-1 after 90 minutes of cup football. Afterwards, Chelsea were clinical to win the penalty shootout.

Moises Caicedo challenge against Newcastle

Caicedo may consider himself a tad fortunate not to be sent off in the Carabao Cup, but we suspect that the fact the challenge happened so early worked in his favour.

The all-action central midfielder has a great aggression in his game and supporters love that about him. However, it’s all about finding a controlled aggression.

Speaking via Newcastle’s official club website last night, Toon manager Eddie Howe expressed his disappointment regarding Caicedo’s lunged challenge on Gordon.

We hope that the Newcastle winger has suffered any kind of serious injury after limping off the field at Stamford Bridge.
