Chelsea are on an upwards trajectory now they’ve got Enzo Maresca in charge as the head coach, but there’s certainly been several mistakes along the way to the get to this point.

It’s been a bumpy time under the Chelsea owners during the last couple of years. Thankfully, it’s starting to look a little more settled at Stamford Bridge, both on and off the pitch.

Maresca has already made several ruthless decisions since he arrived in the manager’s dugout in the summer. For instance, Chris Sutton claims Maresca was right to freeze out Raheem Sterling.

There’s currently high-profile individuals in the Blues squad struggling for minutes, but the manager is coping with the drama well.

Graeme Souness suggests Chelsea made a mistake signing Enzo Fernandez

According to Graeme Souness, Chelsea have made plenty of wasteful signings in recent years. He’s named Blues midfielder Enzo Fernandez as a prime example.

Souness told Up Front’s YouTube channel: “I think there’s been enormous wastage in the current group of players. I think a lot of them will never come up to the levels they think they’ll come up to. The most obvious one at this moment in time who’s not in the team is Enzo Fernandez.”

It’s a pretty harsh criticism on Fernandez, who’s shown flashes of brilliance during nearly two years as a Chelsea player. However, it’s fair to admit that the central midfielder hasn’t yet lived up to his £107m price tag. He currently finds himself dropped from Maresca’s best starting XI, too.

Pat Nevin explained Fernandez is facing a problem when it comes to regaining his Chelsea position because he’s got to try to break up the new-look partnership of Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo in the centre of the park.

Can Enzo Fernandez turn things around at Chelsea?

Fernandez, who earns £180,000-a-week (Spotrac), is at a low point in his Chelsea career. For now, it’s hard to see him overtaking Lavia or Caicedo in the midfield pecking order, which would mean he’s left to substitute appearances in the Premier League and starts in the cup competitions.

So far, the Argentina international has been unable to really emerge as a talisman for the Blues.

Enzo Fernandez’s Chelsea career

Inter Milan and Barcelona are interested in signing Chelsea’s Fernandez, but the player himself is determined to fight for his starting position at Stamford Bridge.

He’s got the technical qualities in possession to dictate games at the highest level. However, he doesn’t really suit either role as a No.8 or No.6 in Maresca’s Chelsea system.
