Alan Shearer has been full of praise for one Chelsea player after the character he showed during their 3-2 win over Brighton on Sunday.

He told the Premier League’s website that he was really impressed with the performance of Enzo Fernandez, and the confidence he showed to step up and convert a penalty in the second half.

Fernandez scored his first and second goals for the club on Sunday as the 10 men of Chelsea held on to a win over Brighton at Stamford Bridge.

Just their second home of the season, the Argentine played a key role in resisting pressure in the second half after Conor Gallagher was sent off.

His suspension will leave Mauricio Pochettino with a new problem to solve. He has started the England international in every league game so far this season.

One player who will still start regardless against Manchester United tomorrow is Fernandez, and Shearer has been full of praise for him after his player of the match performance.

He said: “Delivered a proper No 8 performance and showed great character to step up and convert the penalty that ultimately won the match.”

With the fixtures coming thick and fast in the festive period, it is likely that the World Cup winner will need a break due to the extortionate amount of fixtures he has played in the last 12 months or so.

The timing could work in his favour though, with it likely that Romeo Lavia is going to return from his injury woes in the coming weeks.

The 19-year-old has been tipped to be involved in the matchday squad in recent weeks, and could provide cover and competition for Fernandez and Moises Caicedo before Christmas.
