Gus Poyet tells Chelsea they would be mad not to sign Premier League captain

Former Chelsea player Gus Poyet has identified an individual he’s convinced the Blues should be in the race to sign.

The Chelsea owners haven’t been shy in the transfer window since their arrival in 2022. In fact, there has been a quite incredible turnover of the playing squad, along with key figures at Stamford Bridge.

Apparently, Chelsea have cash in reserve to spend in January if they want a fresh injection midway through the 2025-26 season. Let’s wait and see where Enzo Maresca’s side are by the New Year, though.

Gus Poyet tells Chelsea to target Marc Guehi

The message from Gus Poyet to Chelsea is to make England and Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi a main transfer target.

Poyet told Sports Mole: “Guehi is a top centre back. He has now proven himself at international level, playing superb for Crystal Palace and winning the FA Cup and Community Shield will only enhance his credentials.

“He is proving to be a model professional, well-spoken, respected by his teammates and well-educated as well.

“He is assured, he is becoming a leader in his own way and absolutely Chelsea would be mad not to look at taking him in their team. This is the type of player who elevates the team.”

It is somewhat frustrating that Guehi came through the Blues academy before he was eventually sold to Crystal Palace in 2021. The central defender has gone on to become a talisman at Selhurst Park since. The 25-year-old star, who’s also an England regular, wears the captain’s armband for an impressive Palace team.

Guehi is attracting transfer interest from European giants Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Liverpool.

Will Chelsea be willing to try and re-sign the impressive defender? The fact he’s out of contract at the end of the season surely makes him even more appealing.

Chelsea were linked with Marc Guehi in the summer

It is slightly frustrating to recall that Chelsea abandoned their Guehi interest this summer because they felt his £40m price tag was too steep.

On reflection, Chelsea should have pushed harder to sign the Palace skipper.

Even though the current crop of centre-halves at Stamford Bridge are decent, Guehi has a strong case for being better than all of them. It would definitely be no surprise to see him join an elite club and flourish as he enters the prime years of his career.
