Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has claimed that he believes Conor Gallagher can be a future captain at Chelsea.
He stated in his pre-match press conference that he believes his ties to the club make him a perfect representative for the role.
Gallagher was handed the honour of captaining a Premier League match for the first time last weekend when he was given the armband for the match against Bournemouth.
Despite the underwhelming scoreline, it was undoubtedly a proud moment for him and his family, after spending a large amount of his life associated with the club.
He has been incredibly important for his club this season, starting every game for Pochettino in all competitions.
Pochettino backs Gallagher as captain
This is despite the club making the big money signings of Moises Caicedo and Cole Palmer in similar positions, although injuries have affected the former’s time on the pitch.
Reece James currently has the captain’s armband at Stamford Bridge, and there are no plans from either party for that to end anytime soon.
However, Pochettino has claimed that Gallagher does have the credentials for the role if the Blues needed.
He said: “He was captain about Wimbledon also. He is supposed to be captain. It’s nice. It is normal if you see the starting XI versus Bournemouth, he was also captain versus Wimbledon, it’s not a big thing to create a party.
“He can be a captain, he is from Chelsea and it is perfect for him to represent the team.”
It is likely that Gallagher continues his run in the team on Sunday when the Blues welcome Aston Villa, with them now desperate to return to winning ways this season.
