Chelsea were terrible at the back in their loss to Liverpool at Anfield last night, conceding four goals in a 4-1 defeat.
Thiago Silva and Benoit Badiashile started the game in central defence and had a match to forget.
The two allowed Diogo Jota to squeeze past them for Liverpool’s opener and Craig Burley was quick to criticise them on ESPN FC after the match.
Badiashile has also been slammed by former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie O’Hara for his role in the Blues’ defeat.
Craig Burley baffled by Thiago Silva and Benoit Badiashile’s defending
Burley could not believe what he saw from Silva and Badiashile just before Jota’s goal.
Speaking about the pair’s defending in the build up to the Liverpool forward’s strike, the former Chelsea player said: “How you can let Diogo Jota to get through that gap between Silva and Badiashile, I don’t know.”

Thiago Silva and Benoit Badiashile’s defending not good enough
Silva and Badiashile really should not have allowed Jota to get through them in the manner that he did.
Overall, it was poor defending from Chelsea’s two centre-backs on the night. Still, with how Mauricio Pochettino‘s side played throughout the match, they were always going to lose this fixture.
Silva and Badiashile could have done better for Jota’s goal, but you cannot blame them solely for the loss at Anfield. As a team, Chelsea were simply not good enough and were made to pay for it. They need to raise their level five times in the Carabao Cup final later this month.
