Carney Chukwuemeka joined Borussia Dortmund on loan on transfer deadline day, with the Chelsea midfielder seeking out some much-needed game time in Germany.
The 21-year-old didn’t play a single minute of football under Enzo Maresca this season, so a loan was the more than sensible option.
Chukwuemeka joined Dortmund with an option to buy of £40m, but this is completely up to the Black and Yellow as to whether they want to trigger it.
Initially, it wasn’t the best start to life in the Bundesliga for the Englishman. Chukwuemeka was injured for his first Dortmund game – and then out for the entirety of January.
He has since made his debut, with Chukwuemeka getting some minutes in the Champions League.
Now, he’s announced himself on the Bundesliga stage. So how did he get on?

How Carney Chukwuemeka played for Borussia Dortmund
Chukwuemeka made his way onto the pitch in the 69th minute and got around 20 minutes as Dortmund battered Union Berlin 6-0.
The Chelsea loanee was on the pitch when Dortmund turned it on, scoring four in 14 minutes, with former Chelsea target Serhou Guirassy bagging three of these, to add to his earlier strike.
Chukwuemeka had some great mazy dribbles and even registered a pre-assist after one of these for Dortmund’s fifth. Not bad.
His stats don’t tell too much of a story, but it was a very promising start to life in a new league for the youngster.

Chukwuemeka shares Instagram post
The loanee took to social media after the game to commemorate his German debut. He wrote: ‘Wow. Enjoyable first game at home & 3 Big Points!’
Replies flooded in that consisted of a lot of praise for Carney. He must be feeling ecstatic after some success on the pitch for the first time in a good while.
Whether Chukwuemeka ever comes back to Chelsea remains to be seen, but even a brief cameo like this for Dortmund shows there is some undeniable raw talent there.
