‘I remember’… Harry Redknapp shocked by what Frank Lampard told him about 22-year-old Chelsea player

Harry Redknapp has claimed he was left stunned by what he heard from Frank Lampard about one Chelsea player from his time at the club.

He told BBC Sport’s ‘Proper Football Podcast’ that the former manager told him that he still doesn’t know the game despite the extortionate price they paid for him.

All in all, it has been a rough first year for Mudryk in the Premier League, with him struggling through that time to nail down a regular starting spot.

His fortunes do seem to have turned a corner since Mauricio Pochettino took charge, with him finally finding the net for the first time in a Blue shirt.

However, an injury in recent weeks has seen him take a setback in his development.

Redknapp has claimed though that he is bemused that a player who cost as much as him should have a better understanding of the game.

He said: “If your club signs someone for £20m now, you think, ‘Well, he can’t be much good. Oh, they bought someone for £20m. He must be bang average. £30m he might be alright, £40m – he’s middle of the road, he should be OK’.

“Unless you’re spending £60-£70m now, I mean, it’s just gone bananas. I remember talking to Frank [Lampard], Chelsea bought the left winger [Mudryk] for about £90m.

“Frank says, ‘Harry, he’s so quick, he’s lightning, but he doesn’t know the game’. I’m thinking, ‘For £90m and he doesn’t know the game! I mean, he should know everything for £90m!'”

It remains to be seen if the manager decides to bring him back into the starting side for the upcoming Premier League game against Newcastle.

With the good form of Cole Palmer and Raheem Sterling, it looks as if it will be tough to break in.
