Chelsea beat Inter Milan to the signing of Marco Palestra this summer, although now could be set to bring in a Blues defender instead.

The signing of Palestra was completed with the seal of approval of Xabi Alonso, who promised the player a key part in his Chelsea side.

The addition leans further into the theory that the Spaniard wants to play a back three at Stamford Bridge, with the Italian specialising as a wing-back.

What do you make of Chelsea’s interest in Maxence Lacroix?

Inter Milan suddenly keen on signing Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah

As additions start to come in to Chelsea, the proof they need to start working on exits becomes more clear. The club have a plethora of centre-backs who will see limited minutes next season.

One player who fits into that description is Trevoh Chalobah, who is currently at the World Cup as a late call-up to the England side.

The Blues have never shied away from the fact they would be open to his departure, and now according to Corriere Dello Sport he has suddenly emerged as a target for Inter Milan.

Any sale of the defender would go down as pure profit for the club after he came through the academy, and the current financial situation means that cannot be overstated as a factor.

With Chelsea linked with signing Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace, there has to be some exits in the position, and rampant interest in signing the Englishman could see him as an easy exit option.

Cesc Fabregas’ Como are also keen on Chalobah, and a move there would open up the opportunity for him to feature regularly again in the Champions League.

This would just be the start for the Blues. In an ideal world, they would also be moving on some of Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, Tosin Adarabioyo and Axel Disasi.

Alonso does not need a stacked squad this season with no European football to worry about, and Chalobah is one of those they can afford to get rid of with no risk to the first team squad.
