Jason Cundy warns rivals to watch out for special Chelsea combination he’s spotted

Jason Cundy thinks he’s spotted the potential for an outstanding partnership to grow in Chelsea’s midfield.

The Blues squad looks extremely strong after plenty of investment, particularly in the midfield positions. It is certainly being tested recently with the amount of individuals going down with injuries, too.

Enzo Maresca, the Chelsea head coach, has a collection of quality central midfielders at his disposal. It even worked when right-back Malo Gusto played in midfield against Liverpool before the international break.

Jason Cundy tells people to watch out for Moises Caicedo & Romeo Lavia

Jason Cundy has warned rival clubs to watch out for the Chelsea partnership of Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia

Cundy told talkSPORT: “Him (Caicedo) and Lavia, the relationship they’ve struggled to build up because of Lavia’s injuries. If that gathers pace, watch out. Watch out for those two. That pivot, if those two sit together, wow. I’ve seen glimpses. We’ve all seen glimpses.”

Unfortunately, Caicedo and Lavia have only played 21 games together despite both moving to Chelsea in 2023, largely because of the latter’s injury problems. However, there have been glimpses that they can shine as a midfield pivot, something they did during the second half of last weekend’s win against Liverpool.

Caicedo, who’s been compared to N’Golo Kante, is an all-action central midfielder who’s an expert at breaking up play. The 23-year-old star has started to add goals to his game, too.

As for Lavia, 21, he’s a deep-lying midfield playmaker who is exquisite in possession and evading a press.

There is room for a Caicedo-Lavia pivot to run games behind a roaming Enzo Fernandez, something we would love to see more of.

Of course, Lavia’s terrible injury record feels like the biggest obstacle to seeing the Blues’ midfield getting even stronger. Belgian star Lavia would definitely feel like a new signing if he can overcome frequent interruptions, something we’ve seen in 2025 from Reece James.

What Romeo Lavia said about playing next to Moises Caicedo

Back in July 2025, Lavia expressed his joy about playing next to Caicedo in the centre of the park. He said: “Thank God I play next to the absolute destroyer, sometimes he does my job, I’m like let me do a little bit. He does it for me. Moi is unbelievable.”

With Lavia as the deeper defensive midfielder, Caicedo should have the shackles free to dominate in a box-to-box role. As mentioned above, Fernandez and Santos are superb options as well.

If Chelsea can keep their crop of midfielders fit, we believe it is as good as anything else out there.
