Joe Cole thinks Chelsea’s player may have surprised the fanbase with his ability after yesterday’s win in Europe.

Chelsea beat Gent 4-2 on Thursday night to kickstart the Conference League group stages in positive fashion.

Blues manager Enzo Maresca continues to impress as he watched his side record a fifth straight win across all competitions. Next, they host Nottingham Forest on Sunday in the Premier League before October’s international break.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano recently claimed on The Debrief that Chelsea’s players are delighted with Maresca right now. It’s certainly telling on the pitch because the whole squad is making an impact.

Joe Cole hails Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall

Joe Cole praised Chelsea’s Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall immediately after his European performance versus Gent, which included his first goal for the club.

Interestingly, he suggested that the 26-year-old midfielder may surprise sections of the fanbase with his quality. He carried the ball superbly well and was heavily involved on Thursday night, plus he took his goal confidently.

When reacting to Dewsbury-Hall’s performance versus Gent, Cole told TNT Sports 1 (10:15pm, 3 October): “I think the Chelsea fans will be surprised by how good of a player they’ve got…

“This is a player coming into his peak. If he keeps performing like this, he will be knocking on the manager’s door.

“12 goals last season, you can see why. It’s timing in midfield. He senses where it might drop, he gets there, good contact, and he’ll never forget that.”

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall needed that

Dewsbury-Hall, 26, is surely going to feel so much better about things after his performance in midweek.

It’s been a very slow start for the £30m midfielder (BBC) since his move to Chelsea from Leicester City in the summer. Even though he worked under Maresca last year, he’s been quite far down the pecking order in the early weeks of the season.

The box-to-box central midfielder is yet to start a game in the Premier League and has been left out of the matchday squad altogether on a couple of occasions.

Dewsbury-Hall definitely looked the fittest and the sharpest we’ve seen from him so far in Chelsea colours during the Gent win. Now, we expect the left-footed star to kick on and recapture the form that made him the best player in the Championship last season.
