Ask the majority of Chelsea supporters who they would like as the club’s new manager in the summer, and they would say Cesc Fabregas. But John Obi Mikel is not as sure.
Chelsea are starting their search for a new manager with talks underway with Andoni Iraola’s agents. It has also been reported that talks with Marco Silva have been scheduled, as Chelsea plan for the future.
It is expected that Calum McFarlane will remain in interim charge until the end of the season. It means Chelsea have five games to play under McFarlane’s guidance, including an FA Cup final against Man City.
Where will Chelsea finish this season? Will they get a European spot?🤔
Fabregas is the pick of the managers linked with Chelsea, according to the fans. His work at Como over the last two seasons has been mightily impressive, but John Obi Mikel would rather someone else.
John Obi Mikel against Chelsea hiring Cesc Fabregas
After a brief interim spell while Como were still in Serie B, Fabregas became manager after Como were promoted into Serie A ahead of 2024-25. He guided Como to tenth in Italy’s top tier. This season, fifth.
European football is on the horizon for Como’s excellent young side, which includes Chelsea transfer target Jacobo Ramon and former Blues striker Alvaro Morata. But should Chelsea bring in Fabregas?

On his Obi One podcast, Mikel said: “It’s a bit too early for Fabregas. We all hear about the success with Como in Italy. But for me, I just think it’s a bit too early. A couple more seasons, establish himself a bit.
“Get a bit more experience, maybe come to the Premier League, and coach a lesser team than Chelsea. Listen, we are not an experimental club. We’re not that club. We’re not an experimental football club, no.
“We already made a team, a club, an established club. That’s who we are. We’ve already established ourselves. We’re winners. We win trophies, big trophies, the biggest team in London, winning trophies.
“No, the football club, no. Get managers who are already made, who know and have experience of what it feels of winning titles, whether you won as a player or you won as a manager,” Mikel summarised.
What would you change in Cesc Fabregas’ potential Chelsea XI?
Still looks a bit young 🤔
Why John Obi Mikel is absolutely right about Cesc Fabregas
While Fabregas is loved by Chelsea fans, he has less experience than Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior did before joining Chelsea in management. The pressure at Como is nothing like the pressure at Chelsea.
Fabregas would be an exciting appointment and there is no doubt that he would unite a fanbase, and get players on side. But at Como, it has been pure success. There have been no elements of disappointment.
What if things start to go wrong at Chelsea? He needs to experience failure as a manager before coming to Chelsea. Mikel is right, a move to a lesser Premier League club before Chelsea would benefit Fabregas.
What has Cesc Fabregas said about his future amid Chelsea links?
There is no doubt that at some point, Fabregas leaves Como and joins a big side. Whether he can be tempted by a move to Chelsea remains to be seen. Eden Hazard dreams of Fabregas in the Blues dugout.
Indeed, Fabregas is calm. Not only will Fabregas be excited to take his Como side into Europe, but he is financially involved with the Italian side. Last week, he was asked about a possible move to Chelsea.
Andoni Iraola hasn’t beaten Clearlake’s Chelsea 🚩
“I would be crazy to think of anything else rather than these next five games and getting my team into Europe for the first time in history. I have not seen or heard any comments that my president said.”
He said that before a trip to Genoa, which Como won 2-0. With four Serie A games to play, Como are three points off the Champions League places in Italy and as things stand, qualify for the Europa League.
