Chelsea still plan to keep Mauricio Pochettino in his position as the head coach at least until the end of the season, but they could alter plans depending on the club’s FA Cup run and level of performances.

That is according to well-respected journalist Simon Phillips.

It’s been an underwhelming first year so far for Mauricio Pochettino as the Blues manager.

The Argentine coach saw his Chelsea side lose to rivals Liverpool in last month’s League Cup final. Meanwhile, the team currently sit 11th in the league table.

There’s an FA Cup quarter-final tie at home to Championship leaders Leicester City later this month that has a lot riding on it.

Chelsea are staring down the barrel of a second consecutive year without any European football, which would feel like a disaster and a big reality check.

Phillips reports this week that Chelsea are standing firm with Pochettino following the weekend’s 2-2 draw away to Brentford. There’s still plenty of scrutiny on the games ahead, though.

Phillips said yesterday via his Substack: “Heard Chelsea still doing all they can to follow through this season with Poch. No change right now but more poor performances and FA Cup exit could change things.”

Mauricio Pochettino future

Speaking via BBC 5 Live’s ‘Monday Night Club’ yesterday, Chris Sutton explained why he thinks Chelsea have backed themselves into a position where they must stick with Pochettino and stop firing managers.

Pochettino signed a two-year deal as Chelsea manager with the option of a further year, but will he get to see that all through?

Our guess is the 52-year-old won’t be in the dugout by the time next season begins, largely down to results and the mood of supporters.

However, there’s still time to turn things around as long as you’re in a job.
