Spanish media have now been very critical of performances in recent weeks by Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen.

According to AS, the player who left Chelsea for free last summer has been looking lost this season after an impressive first campaign.

Going under the radar in the hectic first transfer window under Todd Boehly, Christensen left the club after deciding to not renew his contract.

He had established himself as an important member of the defence alongside Antonio Rudiger under Thomas Tuchel.

However, both players decided to not renew their contracts, while the manager swiftly followed him out the door.

Now, AS has been heavily critical of his displays this season, saying he has dropped off in a big way.

They said: “Christensen, the lost center back. Andreas Christensen is going through his worst moment since he signed for FC Barcelona a year and a half ago. The Danish centre-back, who landed at zero cost, with the label of being a great footballer, but very mentally fragile.

“However, in his second year at FC Barcelona, everything seems to have gone to waste. He started strong, adding up to seven consecutive starts (Getafe, Cádiz, Villarreal, Osasuna, Betis, Antwerp and Celta) , but starting with the match against the Galicians, where he was substituted in the 60th minute and with an adverse result for the Blaugrana.

“The defender has been removed from the eleven, playing a maximum of two games in a row as a starter, and with the added aggravation that his last two appearances in the eleven (Real Madrid and Shakthar) ended in defeats.”

The centre-back position is one where there is plenty of faith regarding Chelsea’s future.

Levi Colwill and Benoit Badiashile are currently expected to be breaking through as first choices very soon, although they will soon face competition from a returning Welsey Fofana.
