Journalist Ben Jacobs has claimed that Chelsea’s project left sporting director candidate Michael Edwards ‘blown away.’

The former Liverpool man has been seen as the owners’ ideal man to take over the role which the club have looked to fill over the last few months.

It appears they are close to making their first behind the scenes appointment with the hiring of Christopher Vivell.

The former RB Leipzig man left the Bundesliga side last week, with the club citing a difference in opinion between the two parties as the reason behind the decision.

However, it has since emerged that he was a key target for the technical director job at Stamford Bridge, and is expected to take the role imminently.

This still leaves them looking to fill the sporting director role, after Christoph Freund rejected the role last month.

RB Salzburg eventually convinced their man to stay, leaving the Blues to look again in the market.

It has now been claimed they are still trying to persuade Edwards to take the role, with Jacobs saying that they have made him an offer that has mesmerised him.

He said: “Told Michael Edwards remains intent on seeing out his break from football. Although blown away by Chelsea project, and made an incredible offer, Chelsea would have to wait for him.

“And there is no guarantee on persuading him to join for the summer 2023 window as opposed to after it.”

A few reports recently have claimed they are no longer in a rush to hire a sporting director anymore, despite earlier claims that they were looking to secure a figure in the role before next month’s World Cup.

They may have changed this approach in order to try and attract Edwards to the role in the future, with them seemingly set on him as their number one target.
