Marc Cucurella shares what he says to referees when he is on the bench for Chelsea

Chelsea may be feeling slightly aggrieved with some of the decisions made by officials that have come their way this season.

Enzo Maresca was visibly annoyed Chelsea didn’t get a penalty after Jason Sancho was challenged by Trent Alexander-Arnold in Sunday’s defeat to Liverpool.

Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher said it was not a foul on Sancho, however large sections of the Chelsea fanbase would still contest this even now.

Chelsea players currently have the worst discipline record in the Premier League this season, and unfortunately, a number of those cautions have come as a result of dialogue with the referees.

Marc Cucurella says he is always putting pressure on referees

One player who has been guilty of this is Marc Cucurella, with him now finding himself pretty unpopular with officials.

The Spain international has now stated that he likes to get in the ear of the fourth official and the linesmen even when he is not actually on the pitch for Chelsea.

He told Sky Sports: “When I’m on the bench, yeah I like to speak with my teammates and comment on actions. And then put pressure a little bit on the fourth [official], or to the liners, in case they listen back, and then yeah anything else. Just stay focused on the game and wait for your moment.”

Cucurella has established himself as a crucial member of Maresca’s starting side at Chelsea, meaning he is certainly on the pitch more than he is not.

Chelsea’s worrying Premier League disciplinary record

Cucurella has been one of many examples of Chelsea’s poor disciplinary record having picked up a league-high five yellow cards this season.

The Spaniard didn’t start against Liverpool at the weekend after already picking up a suspension for having too many yellow cards.

He was in the same boat as Wesley Fofana, while Robert Sanchez told his Chelsea teammates had to stop getting unnecessary bookings.

Cucurella believes he gets unfair treatment from officials in England, after being part of the Spain side who beat the Three Lions in the final of the European Championships.

The left-back is available for their game tomorrow night in the Conference League, however it is more likely he will be held back for the weekend, meaning Renato Veiga will get the start in Greece.
