Chelsea have inserted themselves firmly into the race to sign one of Europe’s most promising talents in the final few days of the January transfer window.

The Blues made it clear early in January that they were interested in a deal to sign Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich.

However, the player was pushing for his future to be at the Bundesliga side, which also put their efforts to sign Christopher Nkunku on hold.

The situation changed in recent days after Tel was handed zero minutes since the debacle, and therefore he has made the decision to leave the club this month.

Mathys Tel doesn’t want to join Chelsea

Chelsea remain interested in a deal, whether that be on loan for the rest of the season or on a permanent basis.

However, they face the task of convincing the player that his next destination should be at Stamford Bridge, with first team football tough to come by.

According to BILD, Tel is keen on playing immediately after he leaves Bayern, and he has doubts over whether this will be possible at Chelsea.

There are a number of Premier League sides who are interested in a deal for the Frenchman, as well as sides around Europe.

The Blues would likely be looking to use Tel on the wing, a position where they already have Jadon Sancho, Noni Madueke and Pedro Neto.

Chelsea’s Mathys Tel alternatives

Chelsea have been strongly linked with the signing of Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United, with them sensing an opportunity to make the most of their financial issues.

Ruben Amorim wants to keep Garnacho, but the decision makers want money through the door and homegrown players is a great avenue for that.

This is well known to Chelsea, who have recently parted ways with the likes of Mason Mount, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

It feels as if that potential deal will be one that goes all the way to the deadline, as they weigh up whether they feel signing Garnacho is what they need right now.
