Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino is on board with the club’s plans to hand Conor Gallagher a new contract.

That is according to a report from 90min.

It claims that Chelsea are keen to step up talks with Conor Gallagher over a new deal and that Mauricio Pochettino has given the go-ahead for the midfielder to be offered an extension.

Gallagher’s existing deal expires in 2025, so the Blues extending it obviously makes sense.

He has also been a key player for them this season, starting in all of their Premier League games so far.

Why does Mauricio Pochettino want Conor Gallagher to sign a new contract?

90min‘s report about Pochettino approving Chelsea’s plans to tie Gallagher down to a fresh deal is not far-fetched.

The Argentine recently spoke about the importance of building an English core at an English club.

“It’s important to have English players and important to keep the identity,” he recently told football.london and other outlets.

And again, Gallagher has done well this season. He has been a real engine and combative figure in the middle of the park for the Blues.

As per WhoScored, the 23-year-old is only second to Marc Cucurella when it comes to tackles per game, having averaged 2.8 this season. At this moment in time, you will find it hard to find a harder worker than Gallagher.

Nothing has been signed yet, but if the England international does end up putting pen to paper on a new deal, no one can say he did not deserve the contract.

And if Gallagher is willing to accept that he will not always be a starter under Pochettino with the likes of Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo around, then we fully expect him to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge. After the start he has made to this season, everything is pointing towards that happening and perhaps even soon.
