Mauricio Pochettino has hinted that one Chelsea player could now be about to play in a brand new position for him.

He claimed in his pre-match press conference that the Blues could end up utilising Cole Palmer in a centre forward role due to the issues being suffered in the squad right now.

Pochettino confirmed that Christopher Nkunku would not be involved for Chelsea tomorrow night in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final against Middlesbrough.

He did not play any part at the weekend against Preston, and joins Nicolas Jackson as not available to play up front, although his absence is actually down to him representing his country.

Pochettino hinted though that he may have an ace up his sleeve when it comes to who could feature up front for him.

He said: “No. We are assessing the squad like always. We had a conversation with the owners and sporting directors today and yesterday.

Pochettino hints at Palmer playing striker

“I am so happy because we have Broja, we have Palmer who can play centre-forward we have different players that can play in the striker position and we need our second line players to help the team score goals and win games. I am very positive and happy with the squad. If something appears, we will announce.”

Palmer has featured in somewhat of a striker role once before this season, however this was a unique double role where he featured alongside Conor Gallagher.

While the impotence that day was on his pressing from the front, his goalscoring form in recent weeks suggest he could be playing there to find the net more often instead now.

The manager of course also has Armando Broja available for him, with him surely getting a new level of confidence after finding the net at the weekend in the FA Cup.
