Mauricio Pochettino now wants £50m player at the centre of his long-term plan at Chelsea

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino’s long-term plan at Stamford Bridge is to build an English core.

Chelsea currently have the likes of Reece James and Ben Chilwell in their squad and, according to LondonWorld, Mauricio Pochettino wants his team to have a spine composed of players from England.

As well as James, the same outlet has claimed that the Argentine also wants Conor Gallagher to be at the centre of this core that he is trying to build.

That may be a problem, though, with the 23-year-old continuing to be linked with a move away from the club.

According to The Sun, Tottenham Hotspur, who are interested in Gallagher, may be able to sign the midfielder this month for £50m.

Should Mauricio Pochettino build his Chelsea team around Conor Gallagher?

Gallagher has been a key player for Pochettino this season and is certainly having a strong campaign.

In total, the England international has made 19 appearances in the Premier League and recorded four assists.

He is an individual that Chelsea should be looking to keep hold of; however, you can certainly question if he has enough quality to have a whole team built around him.

Honestly, having spent so much money on other midfielders like Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, the above does not make much sense.

If Chelsea are planning to go for the Premier League title at some point, Gallagher is probably the kind of footballer they should have as a squad player.

It is true, he does work hard on the pitch and the stats show that. The Three Lions star has made 52 tackles in the English top flight this season. But does he have enough technical quality to form part of a title-winning midfield? That is highly debatable.

Whatever the case, Pochettino looks set on making Gallagher a big part of his plans.
