Former Manchester City and England defender Micah Richards has named one Chelsea legend as the most annoying footballer he has ever played against.

Micah Richards was asked what player annoyed him the most during his playing days on The Rest Is Football podcast.

The retired full-back named-checked Arjen Robben, but he was not the man who gave him the most problems in his career.

Richards went up against Robben on numerous occasions at both club and international level.

In the end, Richards decided to go for Didier Drogba when picking his most frustrating opponent.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football, the retired England international said: “I have to say Drogba. I have to say Drogba because he was so strong, he was so aggressive. You touch him, and he goes down too easily and I always tell him when I see him. And he’s like, ‘That’s the game. I’m playing the game.’

“He used to buy the fouls, get his big arms up and then he would just like wink at me and say, ‘I got you this time.’ So I would have to say Drogba.”

Chelsea missing a player like Didier Drogba

Chelsea are not only lacking a forward with Drogba’s consistency, but they also do not have a player who is ready to win at all costs like him.

Richards spoke about how the former striker would go down easily to buy fouls. This Chelsea team do not have that craftiness about them, with Mauricio Pochettino claiming back in September that they are not naughty enough.

“We are showing everyone that we can compete, we can dominate games, we can dominate teams like Liverpool,” the Argentine was quoted as saying by Chelsea’s official club website. “But then we need to be more competitive. I say competitive because I don’t want to use another word, but I will. We need to be more naughty.”

Everything that made the Blues successful, they no longer look to have it. Even so, we should not be at a point where Pochettino’s side find themselves in mid-table, but here we are.

So how do Chelsea go about fixing things? Well, signing a striker who is capable of scoring 20 goals in a season like Drogba would be helpful, and they may very well do that. Napoli centre-forward Victor Osimhen is being heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.

Landing a No.9 of his calibre would obviously be a step in the right direction, but doing that is easier said than done.
