Napoli striker Victor Osimhen is being steered towards a move to Chelsea.

That is according to a report from TEAMtalk.

It claims that several former Chelsea players and intermediaries are trying to convince Victor Osimhen to join the Blues in a potential £120m deal and that there is a confidence that he would pick them over their rivals.

The 24-year-old is a key target for Mauricio Pochettino as the Argentine looks to improve his forward line.

Chelsea’s current first-choice striker Nicolas Jackson was on fire just before the international break, scoring four goals in his last two outings. However, he failed to make much of an impact in the 4-1 loss to Newcastle United on Saturday.

Victor Osimhen worth the hassle

The hassle it is going to take to sign Osimhen is surely going to be worth it. At 24, the Nigerian is already one of the best strikers in the world.

Last season, he scored 31 goals in all competitions for Napoli, with five of those coming in just six Champions League games.

Imagine what Osimhen could accomplish in his peak, which is still a few years away. Ultimately, in the Nigeria international, Chelsea could be getting a class centre-forward for the present and the future.

What has cost Pochettino’s side in a lot of their games this season is not scoring goals. For example, they failed to net in fixtures against Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth, Aston Villa and Brentford.

If Chelsea had Osimhen and his goals for those matches, who knows where they would be right now?

Since those fixtures, Jackson has actually done pretty well. But is the 22-year-old enough to take the club back into the Champions League? Alone, no.

It would make sense to bring in a world-class striker like Osimhen and let Jackson act as his deputy. That is the way to go if Chelsea want to become a competitive side again and relinquish their status as a mid-table outfit.
