‘Might not be over’: 24-year-old could yet stay with Chelsea, new deal could still be agreed – journalist

Journalist Simon Phillips has claimed on his Substack that there is still a chance Chelsea agree a new contract with Mason Mount.

There is plenty of talk suggesting the Cobham graduate could be on the move at the end of the season, when he enters the final year of his contract with the club.

Todd Boehly has made it clear that he doesn’t wish to have players around who are in their last year with the club, after the situation that allowed Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen to leave for free.

There has been plenty of talk over if he will be on the move to a rival Premier League club. Liverpool and Manchester United have been linked with a move to sign the 24-year-old.

While a lot of the discussions have pointed to a summer exit, Phillips has claimed he has a good source telling him the Blues haven’t given up on agreeing terms with him.

Still a chance Mount stays

He said: “I had some rare recent positivity from a good source on the Mason Mount situation, suggesting to me that it might not be over yet and that there is still some belief that a deal can be struck in the summer.

“Chelsea doesn’t believe it to be over at all, far from it. There’s still some optimism there. Both parties ideally want to extend.

“They value Mount so much that they want to get him on a longer contract before the rules change this summer.”

The Blues have already tied down fellow academy graduate Reece James to a long-term deal, and all the intentions suggest that they want to do the same with Mount.

However, with reports claiming that he has already been offered similar terms to the wing-back, it looks like work still needs to be done to keep him in West London.
