Chelsea have officially suffered their first failure of the summer window after Brighton confirmed the signing of teenage talent Zadok Yohanna. Now, he’s explained why he chose the Seagulls.
The 18-year-old Nigerian attacker has completed a move to one of the Premier League’s most exciting sides after playing just 18 games at senior level for the Swedish side. But he’s certainly caught the eye.
Looking back at Christian Pulisic’s time at Chelsea, how would you desrcibe it?🤔
He’s had a hand in nine goals in 12 games for AIK during Sweden’s 2026 season, and that was enough for a multitude of Premier League clubs to show interest. Chelsea are among the clubs to show interest.
But on Saturday, Brighton confirmed the signing of Yohanna, and reports claim the Seagulls have spent £21.5m to nab his signature. Now, Yohanna has explained why he chose to join Brighton over others.
Yohanna explains Brighton decision as Chelsea issue laid bare
It was Jamie Carragher who once questioned why any young player would want to join Chelsea. They continue to do so, but as the army of young talent grows, there will be a time when that line dries up.

Speaking to Brighton’s website, Yohanna explained that he felt Brighton’s path into the first team was the best opportunity he had of playing senior football and establishing himself in the Premier League.
“I watch Premier League games a lot, so I know the teams that use young players, and Brighton is one of them. They are really good at developing young talents, and I think their style of play will fit me a lot.”
Chelsea’s issues are now twofold ahead of the summer window
Brighton pipping Chelsea to a young, talented signing is something that simply would not have been able to happen 10 years ago. Even five seasons ago, it would have felt unlikely, but now it’s a real possibility.
Chelsea have high hopes for Josh Acheampong under Xabi Alonso…
There are two issues. Firstly, as Carragher predicted, Chelsea are not going to be able to attract the gems they once did, with the squad so big and pathways so few. Xabi Alonso may have 40 players to pick from.
He will have some big decisions to make when pre-season starts, loanees return and new transfers come in. Without Europe, that number needs to be dramatically reduced by the time the window slams shut.
And Chelsea, without Europe, is the second issue. Players on Chelsea’s list will look at a stable Brighton or an exciting Bournemouth, going in the right direction. Despite the size of Chelsea, they may be better.
