Chelsea fell to just their second defeat of the season yesterday when they were beaten 2-1 by league leaders Liverpool.

The Blues put in a strong performance for much of the afternoon, even recording the highest rate of completed passes at Anfield for a Premier League side.

Chelsea had put themselves on level terms for a brief period of the game, with Nicolas Jackson’s strike eventually being rightly awarded by VAR.

The striker was praised for his performance in the game. He was again given the task of taking the match to Virgil van Dijk and co at the back.

Despite having not many chances to equalise late, one fell to Cole Palmer with about 20 minutes to go, although his effort was blocked as a sea of Liverpool bodies tried to get in the way.

Nicolas Jackson not happy with Cole Palmer

Gary Neville noticed that Jackson was not pleased that the ball didn’t find its way to him during what could have been the moment to get the Blues back into the game.

He said during commentary for Sky Sports: “Nicolas Jackson is not happy with Cole Palmer. Pedro Neto does well and there is space in the wide areas. Palmer is entitled to have a go.”

Very few would criticise Palmer for taking an effort on right now, with him performing at levels very few can match in world football.

Palmer fails to impress vs Liverpool

It has to be said though that yesterday was not his best outing, with it seeming like Liverpool had a very clear plan in place to shut him down in the attacking phase.

Palmer is definitely going to be absent on Thursday night, with him not included in the squad for the group stage of the Conference League.

It is likely that Jackson does not start either, giving a chance for both Joao Felix and Christopher Nkunku to prove that they should be considered for more Premier League minutes in their preferred positions.
