Mauricio Pochettino wasn’t the best appointment by Chelsea last summer when they were searching for a manager to work with a young squad of players.
That is according to former Blues star Marcel Desailly.
First and foremost, we think it’s a very strange comment!
Mauricio Pochettino arrived at Chelsea at the start of the season with a glowing CV when it comes to developing and improving youngsters. For example, you only need to look to see how he moulded a fantastic side at Tottenham over many years.
The 51-year-old Chelsea head coach is finding it tough during his debut season at Stamford Bridge to bring any consistency. That’s part of the risk when the club’s transfer model is based around mainly signing stars for the future, though.

Marcel Desailly has raised alarm bells over Chelsea selecting Pochettino for the manager’s dugout this season.
However, he does conceded the Argentine boss does still need time.
Desailly told beIN SPORTS: “When they were choosing [their manager] they were not yet sure about their strategy, bringing in young players or experienced players. They made a decision to bring a whole lot of young players that they had in the system and some other ones to build up. The casting was not perfect on Pochettino taking over the Chelsea team. It could have been another coach more experience on that grade of players. But he needs time.”
Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea
Like most Chelsea fans, we’ve had our own frustrations with Pochettino at various parts of the season so far. However, they’ve mainly been around tactical decisions in certain games.
For instance, the left-back conundrum has caused headaches. Meanwhile, Enzo Fernandez’s positioning may have been handled better.
As for Pochettino as a man-manager of a very young group, we’ve got no concerns about that. In fact, you only need to read countless player interviews this season to hear the love towards the head coach.
Speaking via Sky Sports last week, Chelsea icon Didier Drogba said he thinks Pochettino is doing the best job possible right now.
