Pat Nevin has made a prediction about Chelsea’s Cole Palmer regarding his place in England’s plans moving forward.

Currently, Cole Palmer is one of the most in-form players in the world. The Chelsea star emphasised that at the weekend by scoring four goals in a mesmerising individual display against Brighton in the Premier League.

The 22-year-old attacker is so well suited to the No.10 position he’s playing under Enzo Maresca. We see no reason why the head coach would change that approach because he makes teammates around him better when he’s operating centrally.

Also, speaking via Match of the Day at the weekend, Micah Richards suggested Palmer’s movement is underrated.

A lot of people are now curious to see Palmer replicate his club success on the international stage with England. However, it’s worth remembering that the Chelsea talent only has nine senior England caps to his name so far, starting just two games.

Pat Nevin on ‘special’ Cole Palmer

Acccording to Pat Nevin, it’s surely a matter of time before Chelsea’s Palmer nails down a starting position in England’s best line-up with the way that he’s performing. In fact, he’s suggested that the playmaker may be the best player from all of the young English talents currently available.

Nevin wrote in his BBC Football Extra newsletter (30 September): “I was on air for BBC Radio 5 Live from the Emirates when it filtered through that Cole Palmer had already scored two after only 28 minutes against Brighton. Our commentator Ian Dennis suddenly got further news that Chelsea had scored again. Knowing nothing more than this, live on air I added to my notes, ‘Cole hat-trick’. I was that confident it would be him even before we were told, Denno called me ‘Mystic Meg’.

“Palmer duly popped in a fourth to underline that among all the great young talents in English football at a very special time, he is probably already the best of the bunch. His four could easily have been six and he should have had a hat-trick of assists on the day too.

“It is hard to imagine how he doesn’t grab a starting berth for England now, even with the likes of Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham, Jack Grealish and Eberechi Eze on the scene.”

Listen to John Obi Mikel advice

Speaking via his podcast back in July, John Obi Mikel insisted England must start Palmer. Hopefully, we see the Chelsea ace become a key player for his country moving forward.

Let’s see if interim England boss Lee Carsley picks him and starts in upcoming Nations League fixtures this month. In the long term, whoever become Gareth Southgate’s permanent successor needs to put their faith in Palmer.

It was torture watching the talented youngster spend most of Euro 2024 watching from the bench.
